The PlayStation 3 system has hit a milestone today as it reaches firmware 4.0. This firmware is mainly to prepare the PS3 system to be able to interact with the new PS Vita which is hitting Japan this month. The PS3 is to serve as a content management device between the PS Vita and the PS3. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

Also included in the update is that Playstation Plus member can now select what they want with the automatic update feature. The update is mandatory so you will need to install it if you wish to play online. We have the links below.

The 4.0 Update includes:

  • Prepares the PlayStation 3 to serve as a content management device with the PS Vita
  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    Game patches
    System software
    Recommended games and videos
    Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

How to install direct download Firmware onto Ps3:

  1. Before starting, use your PC to create a folder named ‘PS3′ on the storage media or USB device. Within the folder, create a folder named ‘UPDATE’ (This folder name is case sensitive and must appear in all capital letters). Once the UPDATE folder has been created, download the PS3 system software update (The link above) to this location.
  2. Once the update data has been saved, disconnect the storage device and connect it to your PS3 via the slots under the slot cover or the USB connectors depending on the device you’re using.
  3. Once connected, navigate to Settings on the PS3 Home Menu, select [System Update] and then [Update via Storage Media]. Select the connected device and your PS3 will install the update data stored there.
