Need For Speed: The Run South Africa Launch Event

Posted on 18. Nov, 2011 by in Articles, News

Earlier this week I had a chance to go to the Need for Speed: The Run launch hosted by Electronic Arts. It was a great event hosted at Kyalami race track in Midrand South Africa. We were treated to a driving skill that not everyone gets a chance to do, drifting.

Yes that’s right they had two of the top drifters in the country, Jonathan Rudman and Jason Ayrton Senna Webb who also happens to be the countries youngest drifter at the age of 17. He doesn’t have a learners yet and isn’t allowed on the roads legally but he sure can drift a car with no sweat.

The event was great fun with a great turn out, though I think this was due to the fact that we going to be drifting but the other main reason was to celebrate the launch of the exciting new Need for Speed: The Run. We were able to get our hands on the game before we did the drifting and everyone was having a blast with the game. Be sure to check our review soon as we post it up next week. Oh and we will be running a competition as well which we will post up later today.

Anyway back to the drifting, after signing the usual indemnity forms six of us were split into groups of three per car, where the crazy drifters tried to make us bring up our snacks from a little earlier. Swinging the car from one direction to the next with just a spin of the wheel and a foot flat on the gas peddle. Well at least that’s what it looked like to me.

The cars that were going to take us on the stomach turning joy ride were a pair of Chevrolet Lumina’s that were fairly kitted out. These V8 monsters sounded simply fantastic and were really comfortable as well, no roll cages needed. Though perhaps this may have put some people off. Interestingly is that the cars had to do a cool down lap before the actual drifting because while drifting there isn’t enough air entering the engine, what with going sideways and all. Below I have posted some photos and some videos of the event, because words cannot describe the feeling of being swung around in a car in a parking lot.

A huge thank you to EA for organising the event and for the invite, I had an excellent time and cannot wait for the next one.
