Unboxing the PlayStation Move

Posted on 09. Sep, 2010 by in News, Peripherals

So today I arrived at work to see a package (wrapped in double layer bubble wrap) waiting at my desk. Before I even put my laptop down I attack it like a 8 year old on Christmas morning and then realize that a package this size and wrapped in double layer bubble wrap might be fragile. So I grab the scissors and cut open the package like a civilized member of sociality. Yes it’s the starter kit for the PlayStation Move.

The first thing that I noticed was the box. This blue shiny cube with some product images of the move on each of it’s sides. What really caught my eye and is this reflective part on each side. It’s like a concave mirror on the box with a really great effect of a camera and illusion of depth. It’s awesome!

The awesome box

Upon opening the box, which is sliced diagonally through the centre, you can see that this is some serious hardware from Sony. The Move and PS Eye camera are placed into the box in a way that ooze style. Both the peripherals are lying in a custom bed of foam with the Move in the centre and the eye just on top of it. Below is the instruction manual and the starter disc containing the demo’s, this was the press kit so I received a media disc instead.

Let me speak about the eye first, I was a little disappointed in this as there is no clip to attach the eye to your TV, it has a flat stand. I found this strange, what happens if your TV is attached to the wall? This can make it slightly difficult to place the camera as it is needed to be placed as around chest level, most commonly above the TV. You can place the eye below the TV and tilt the camera up but it’s not ideal. Also the camera lens seems a little loose, flimsy and delicate. I just thought it would be more solid, if that makes sense.

Now the Move on the other hand, you can see that Sony really did some research and that the manufacturing of this hardware is fantastic. The Move feels solid, comfortable (in either hand), sturdy and very light. The buttons are in the right position and the trigger on the underside is better than the ones you’ll find on the DS3 and even the Xbox controllers. What I found that was really interesting, is that the white ball on top of the Move is actually soft and flexible. You can actually squeeze it, I always thought that it would be similar material to a ping pong ball or of a more solid plastic. I think this is to make it less breakable, as you will be swinging this thing around your living room and if you happen to drop it, well it won’t break.
