PS3 Hacked? PS3 Jailbreak Looked at and Detailed

So when I first read about the PS3Jailbreak I didn’t really bother to post about it because it looked like it was a fake and that you required a debug PS3 system. But I have kept my eye on it to see if anything else comes from it. Sony has been going strong and hack free for four years now, all attempts have been flattened by Sony’s tech department when ever there was a hint at breaking the system,a firmware would be released.
Now with this new Jailbreak hack using a USB dongle to ‘attack’ the PS3 by writing some software called the backup manager onto the system during the cold boot that you must place the system into. The guys over at Digital Foundry have analysed it and have some interesting things to report back.
It’s real. Almost four years after its launch, the PlayStation 3′s much vaunted security has finally been completely and unequivocally compromised.
How long till we see a firmware update from Sony and can they even block it with the firmware? What about PSN would you still be able to login and play online? Would Sony be able to tell if you have hacked your machine and then ban you completely from the PSN? With this software freely available does this mean that we may start to see some other 3rd party development for the PS3?
The presence of the PKG installation option does indeed mean that the likes of emulators and media players could be ported and installed on to the PS3.
Below I have loaded a video from someone who has tested the device on a new PS3 slim. This is to show that this certainly does look real and that people will be able to play any game possibly downloaded from the internet. It is also one of the now numerous video show casing and explaining how the Jailbreak works.
Unless Sony is capable of rewriting the most basic low-level code on the PS3′s BIOS, there’s little it can do to defeat the USB vector of attack – it’s all about preventing the injected code from working.
For a more detailed and really interesting read about the new PS3 Jailbreak head on over to the Digital Foundry’s article. It is very interesting.
On a side note We here at PS3blog do not condone the use of the PS3 Jailbreak and we do not support piracy.
