Blur Review

I truly enjoy racing games, especially ones with fast licensed cars, intense designed tracks and better still, cars equipped with weapons. Bizarre Creations brings all of this to us with their new action racer, Blur. A word of warning though the single player difficulty can be a little bit of a blur.
The AI is brutal from the get go, and it never lets up it can get even tougher especially when you get to the racers with twenty cars on the track. When trying to master the drifting and learning of the tracks, the AI would keep launching attacks upon attacks on me and always at the wrong time. Nearly 90% of the time I would be hit from 2nd to last, I found that the trying to maintain first place can be tougher than obtaining it. What’s more is that if you do find yourself trailing behind the pack it can very difficult to catch up and you may be racing against yourself. In most racing games there is usually a catch up system that will keep you close to the action, I found this missing from Blur.
Blur isn’t only about twenty car racers, there are some other modes to mix things up a bit. There’s really fun destruction mode where you have to shoot enemies to gain time and points, and the Checkpoint stages where you’re racing against the clock. But I think it’s telling that the best levels in the game’s Career mode were the ones where you generally were tasked with a single goal like attacking or racing, rather than having to combine the two together as the standard race mode makes you do.
During the racers you gather “lights”, the in-game collectibles you get for placing in a race or for completing specific objectives in an event. But the more importantly are fans which are gained by driving well, doing specific objectives in a level, or by attacking opponents. You can gain lights for getting a certain level of fans in a given stage, but the primary purpose of fans is to unlock new tiers of cars for your use.
Blur shows off it’s true colours with the multiplayer portion of the game. Every gamer knows that playing against another human is where the true excitement is. Blur brings to racing what Modern Warfare brought to FPS. With the constant levelling up, challengers for more XP and of course the perks, but mostly the little addictive itch of competitiveness. Unfortunately due to my fantastic line I was unable to join a twenty player race, but had to settle for only the ten player race. Still it was a blast and intense and I could only imagine what a full twenty player race could be like.
Conclusion
So to sum up Blur will give you intense hours of racing action and it will certainly give you a challenge as you drive through the single player campaign. Where you will get more enjoyment is if you take Blur online and race with your friends or even some other racers from around the world. Visuals and sound to please the eyes and ears, an all round adrenaline packed racing title.
