PS3 Error 8001050F Explained

Posted on 01. Mar, 2010 by in News, PSN Network

I am creating this post because the Internet has gone bananas with this error code and i thought it would be a better place to easily find exactly what the updates are. So keep checking back here as i will be updating this as soon as we find out what is happening from Sony. An of course as soon as the fix is up we will post it here.

What we know so far about the error:
This error is ONLY effecting the older Phat PS3′s so the 40gig, 60gig, and 80gig models, the PS3 slims are not effected at all. The error is known as the internal clock bug and it happened when the clock struck midnight on the night of the 28th February 2010. Sony have still not managed to fix it or even know what the cause is, but they are working on it as you read this.

The issue seems to stem from a date bug that affects the DRM and authentication systems in the PS3. This causes the PS3 system date to reset to 1st January 2000. When a PS3 attempts to connect to PlayStation Network it logs the 8001050F error which causes a series of errors, including offline games not working, corrupt trophies and loss of PSN DLC – basically anything that requires a connection to PSN to function.

One theory points to an issue with the console’s internal calendar, which is reportedly resetting pre-slim models to 12/31/1999.

The really strange thing is that this is still effecting PS3′s that are not connected to the net or PSN, but mainly get the error with trophy supported games, retail or PSN.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

THIS IS A WORLD WIDE PROBLEM!

What Models are affected? Does this affect me?

Known PS3 Phat Model
CECHA04 – affected
CECHE04 – affected
CECHG04 – affected
CECHH04 – affected
CECHJ04 – affected
CECHK04 – affected
CECHL04 – not affected
CECHP04 – not affected

-If you have a Slim PS3, you’re good to go. Continue playing it as normal.
-If you have a “fat” PS3, you may be affected. Some fat PS3s have worked ok, but it seems a good majority have been bugged.

What can you do?
At this stage nothing! All we can do is wait for a reply from Sony or as some think that it is due to the internal clock, that it will correct itself tonight at midnight when the date reaches 01/03/2010 or 03/01/2010 for the US readers.

Possible Fix?
Some people on the forums have reported that opening up your PS3 and removing the battery for ten minutes and then replacing it fixes the problem. Unless your PS3 is out of warranty or you don’t mind possibly bricking something else, I wouldn’t do this.

The Updates:
Below is where I will be updating as we hear things from around the net. Be sure to check out our original post for some links to forums of other users. Also please share your experience below in the comments section.

UPDATE: According to Sony’s US PlayStation blog, the company has “narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this.” However, despite more calls to Sony there’s no indication on the time it’ll take to fix – or indeed what the fix will be. More updates the instant we get them.

UPDATE 2: PSN status update: We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them.

UPDATE 3: PSN status update (part 2): Readers/followers are confirming that “slim” units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.

UPDATE 4: Sony has yet to provide an official update on the problem. The company did say, however, owners should wait before trying to resolve the issue. “Please don’t trust info regarding this issue unless from an official Sony source.”

UPDATE 5: We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

UPDATE 6: Sony’s Jeff Rubenstein says we should be “fine” in 24 hours.

UPDATE 7: It’s alive! So it turned out to be the internal clock issue and you Phat PS3 should be 100% working again. You may need to correct the date but everything should be running correctly, trophies and save data.

    Hi
I just want clarity on your last comment. Must we not use our PS3 at all or is it only for online gaming?
    Thanks

Hi Brett I wouldn’t use my PS3 phat for the next 24hrs until we hear something from Sony, if I was you, just in case. If you have a slim then you are fine and can game away.

Hi Inzo, no the problem happened during yesterday if you were online or not. You should be fine today. Just had to wait for the internal clock to tick over from a fake leap year.

Reports says that ps3 error 8001050f code is an error in the internal settings of ps3 which only affected the ps3 fats, but not all of them.Sony says it’s just a bug in the clock functionality which caused the inability to log in. BTW, it has fixed itself already. It’s not that they deliberately installed a bug in there so that we’ll be forced to buy the new ps3 slim.

I was just looking for this information for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your website. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this kind of informative web sites in top of the list. Usually the top websites are full of garbage.
