PS3 new invite system

It’s always good to hear of new developments in the world of the PS3, particularly ones aimed at making our day to day gaming activities easier. So what is it this time? Well it’s not exactly state of the art but it’s getting somewhere and involves online game invites through a more “social” setting if you will. That is, invites from the XMB chat room.

How does it work? It’s simple: get into a Chat Room, load up a supported game and click the relevant option (for Bioshock 2, this is “Manage Invites”. From there, select the empty box at the top as normal.

When you do this, though, in addition to inviting from your friends list or a new Online ID, you’ll see Invite From Chat Room – click it, and the XMB will list your current Chat Rooms – pick one and it’ll invite everyone in that lobby.

There are a few drawbacks to this new “advancement,” biggest of all being the fact that, well, who uses the text chatrooms anyways? I mean sure I used it once or twice while playing but found it more of an annoyance then anything else. Secondly, only games which support this function at the moment are Bioshock 2, The Aliens vs Predator Demo and Call of Duty: Classic… So I think we can basically liken this to an open beta test.
