Subscription-based PSN Services Coming?

Posted on 23. Nov, 2009 by Freak_c in News, PSN Network

Are the days of the PSN being free numbered? Well yes and no. Sony released a presentation report from its media and investor conference, one portion of which focused on the future profitability of its gaming platform. One element of the company’s strategy is turning a larger profit on PlayStation Network and sadly yes, according to the report, Sony’s planning to obtain a “new revenue stream from subscription.”

But this doesn’t mean that it will be like Xbox live and you will have to pay for the service of online gaming. But you may have to pay for other media services. There isn’t final word on whats what but we assume that it would be for the movie and tv service.

“We have not made any formal announcements on a subscription based service. We’re looking into a variety of options.”

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” states Sony overlord Kaz Hirai. “Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

So it seems that online play will not be effected but say you want to get into Home perhaps that would require a subscription. Would you pay to play if Sony does go this route?
