PS3 slim specs and details

Posted on 19. Aug, 2009 by in Images, News, Peripherals

So as we know, thanks to Freak_C, the ps3 slim has officially been announced with a price cut to boot. However he did not explain all the details as I shall try to explain now.
Firstly, just let me point out that you may be slightly disappointed with the things I’ll mention about the new slim as compared to it’s big brother.

The pros:

  • HDD size: 120gb (250gb speculation)
  • Price: $299 or 299 Euro’s
  • Size: 32% smaller than original ps3
  • Weight: 32% lighter than original ps3
  • Power consumption: 32% less than original ps3
  • HDD is still swappable and apparently easier
  • Shipped with FW3.0

The cons:

  • Charcoal black colour and textured not smooth (no more piano black)
  • Yet again, only 2 USB slots
  • No backwards compatibility with ps2 games (maybe firmware someday)
  • No more option to install other OS such as Linux
  • No rotating logo for vertical standing console
  • Console can not stand vertically without vertical stand
  • No more touch sensitive buttons, power and eject buttons are now cheaper “push in” buttons

Along with the ps3 slim comes the announcement of the changing of the  PS3 brand name from “PLAYSTATION 3″ to “PlayStation 3″, and introducing a new “PS3″ logo that will in their words “unify everything under the familiar Playstation brand”.

All in all, a bit of a disappointment in many aspects. Given the fact that changing hdd’s in any ps3, that is can stand vertically with no help needed, looks better etc heavily outweighs the power saving and weight savings aspects in my opinion. I still prefer her larger, curvy, sexier big sister. However it’s good to see some variety and a price drop along with it. Lets hope it’s a tad more reliable to the former launch model. Source

I think we looking at an external power supply as well. Look at the back of the PS3 it has a smaller power slot.

you might be right, it looks like the power switch is missing.
i really am not a fan of external power bricks.

Surprisingly enough, it’s internal power supply, don’t know how they got that right in all honesty

Noooo, IMO it’s fugly. Will stick with my older PS3. This slim one looks so cheap, okay it is cheap but still. It lost it’s “best looking console” advantage.

@ Rob – Sure that power supply is internal? First though was same as Freak that it’s external.

Plus side – At least it’s got a decent HD in it

Yip, indeed it is internal… Problem I see with that is the space inside the console. Laptop power supplies for example are external for the very fact that it produces heat, what will happen here?

It is a positive about the 120gb (especially since most have no clue that it can be swapped out for a 500gb for example, and many thought the ps3 was behind the xbox in that respect. However, for the ps3 literate, it’s not really such a big thing

most of the heating issues in laptops come from the batteries, which the ps3 doesn’t have. so i don’t see excessive heating a a major problem… hope i’m not proven wrong.

Time will tell :) look how the launch 60gb turned out to be, lets hope I’m wrong though and the slim carries a failure rate of under 3%

I think that is kinda nit picking at it. Honestly many Ps3′s are tucked away in a entertainment area so the color/design isnt that big of a deal.

No rotating logo, who cares haha

Sure it needs a stand but that isnt a big deal at all. I like mine to lay flat.

No more touch sensative buttons??? It just shows how lazy some people are to complain about haveing to actually press the button.

I am dissapointed that it doesnt have 4 usb slots and no backwards comp. But other than that they did have to find ways to cut prices on it and it has 120GB so I think its a win win. Who honestly goes around showing their ps3 off so I am not worried about the new look. I am excieted about the $299 and 120 GB. At least we dont have to worry aout the red ring of death.

So I am excited as heck about this , I will be buying one myself.
